NFL Recent Player News
|8/20/2017||Anquan Boldin, Buf, WR|
|Boldin abruptly announced his retirement just under two weeks after signing with the Bills. General manager Brandon Beane made it official Sunday night by saying the team respects Boldin's decision to retire. Boldin's decision came as a complete surprise especially after he talked about building on his legacy entering his 15th season and serving as a mentor for Buffalo's young group of receivers.
Analysis: Boldin was the NFL's 2015 Walter Payton Man of the Year winner and ranks in the top four among active receivers with 1,076 catches, 13,779 yards receiving and 82 touchdowns receiving. Boldin appeared in just one preseason game for Buffalo, and finished with one catch for 5 yards in a 20-16 loss to Philadelphia on Thursday night.
|8/20/2017||Jordan Matthews, Buf, WR|
|Matthews is confident he'll be ready for the start of the regular season after taking part in light drills for the first time since hurting his chest a week ago.
Analysis: Matthews, however, isn't sure if he'll be available to play in Buffalo's final two preseason games because he's still experiencing soreness, especially when breathing. He remains upbeat despite initially being frustrated after chipping a bone in his sternum during his first practice with the Bills after being acquired in a trade with Philadelphia on Aug. 11.
|8/20/2017||Jordan Reed, Was, TE|
|The Redskins have activated Reed from the physically-unable-to-perform list.
Analysis: Reed had been on the list since the start of training camp in late July because of an injury to the big toe on his left foot. The team announced the roster move Sunday. With the toe injury lingering since last season, Reed has not practiced with teammates or played in a preseason game. He said Friday he expected to practice next week.
|8/20/2017||Christian Hackenberg, NYJ, QB|
|Jets quarterback Josh McCown sat out this game, but Hackenberg did little to impress in his absence. Hackenberg was 2 of 6 for 14 yards and was sacked twice Saturday against Detroit. "He really didn't get a chance," Jets coach Todd Bowles said. "That's not a fair evaluation of a kid, because he didn't get a chance on the couple pass plays he had. They had a lot of pressure on him."
Analysis: Even after Hackenberg struggled, Bowles wasn't willing to name McCown his starter for the season opener. He indicated the quarterback competition would continue and that Hackenberg would still be evaluated. "I can't say when he'll play, or how he'll play, but he'll play and be evaluated again next week," Bowles said
|8/20/2017||Bilal Powell, NYJ, RB|
|With Matt Forte still recovering from a hamstring injury, Bilal Powell had nine carries for 32 yards for the Jets on Saturday against the Lions.|
|8/20/2017||Josh Doctson, Was, WR|
|Doctson entered late in the second quarter Saturday and had a 12-yard catch. He missed the exhibition opener because of a hamstring injury.
Analysis: The 2016 first-round draft pick sat out all but two games as a rookie because of injuries.
|8/20/2017||Samaje Perine, Was, RB|
|Perine, a fourth-rounder from Oklahoma, ran for 45 yards on eight carries.
Analysis: Perine also caught a 29-yard pass from backup QB Colt McCoy, part of a much stronger performance for Perine than a week ago, when he fumbled. "A major step up," coach Jay Gruden said.
|8/20/2017||Dak Prescott, Dal, QB|
|Prescott posted a perfect 158.3 passer rating as the Dallas Cowboys defeated the Indianapolis Colts 24-19 on Saturday at AT&T Stadium.
Analysis: Prescott completed 7 of 8 passes for 108 yards and a touchdown, a 32-yard strike to receiver Dez Bryant on the opening drive.
|8/20/2017||Darren McFadden, Dal, RB|
|McFadden looked like a capable fill-in for Ezekiel Elliott with 59 yards on nine carries, but was stripped by Matthias Farley on his final run late in the first quarter on Saturday against the Colts.|
|8/20/2017||Charcandrick West, KC, RB|
|West continued his bid for a roster spot, rushing for 113 yards on seven carries and helping the Chiefs amass 413 yards of total offense Saturday against the Bengals.|
|8/20/2017||Kareem Hunt, KC, RB|
|Hunt got a chance to show his versatility in his home state Saturday at Cinncinati. He was limited to one carry and one catch in the preseason opener. On Saturday, he was the featured running back on the first two drives. Hunt had 8 carries for 40 yards and 3 catches for 23 yards.
Analysis: Hunt is Toledo's all-time leading rusher and had a lot of family and friends at Paul Brown Stadium. "Honestly it kind of felt like a homecoming for me," he said. "It meant a great deal to come here and play the way I did."
|8/20/2017||Patrick Mahomes II, KC, QB|
|Mahomes threw a pair of touchdown passes, solidifying his spot as the Chiefs' primary backup, and Kansas City beat the Bengals on Saturday.
Analysis: Mahomes moved into the role of Alex Smith's backup a week ago and was smooth against the Bengals (1-1), who chased him from the pocket but couldn't stop his accurate on-the-move throws. Mahomes, the 10th overall pick from Texas Tech, was 10 of 14 for 88 yards with touchdowns of 1 and 7 yards .
|8/20/2017||Christian McCaffrey, Car, RB|
|McCaffrey, the Panthers' first-round pick, showed his skills in the first half Saturday against the Titans, first scoring on a 17-yard run for Carolina's first touchdown, and later turning a screen pass from Derek Anderson into a 38-yard catch and run.
Analysis: The rookie finished the day with 33 yards rushing on three carries and had 39 yards on two receptions. "You always hold your breath when he's got the football, especially when he's got space," coach Ron Rivera said. "That's one of the things we have to do. We've got to make sure we're putting him in a position to have that kind of success."
|8/20/2017||DeMarco Murray, Ten, RB|
|The Titans elected to hold out Murray, who was in uniform, but did not play on Saturday against Carolina.
Analysis: Murray has been battling a hamstring injury, but returned to practice and worked both days against the Panthers.
|8/20/2017||Marcus Mariota, Ten, QB|
|Mariota threw a touchdown pass and the Titans edged the Panthers 34-27 on Saturday.
Analysis: Mariota, who finished 6 of 8 for 61 yards and one touchdown, completed a 20-yard pass to rookie receiver Taywan Taylor and then added a 9-yard run on the first two plays of the game. "I thought we came out fast, made a couple of big plays, were able to go down and score," the QB said.
|8/20/2017||Trevor Siemian, Den, QB|
|Siemian, who started the preseason opener a week ago, came off the bench to throw a touchdown pass as the Broncos beat the San Francisco 49ers 33-14 on Saturday night.
Analysis: It's still tough to say if Siemian or Paxton Lynch will be the Broncos' starter. Neither has done much to distinguish himself.
|8/20/2017||Paxton Lynch, Den, QB|
|Lynch was 9 of 13 and showed good pocket presence by scrambling out of trouble a few times, but managed only 39 yards through the air in less than two quarters in the Broncos' preseason win over the 49ers.
Analysis: It's still tough to say if Lynch or Trevor Siemian will be the Broncos' starter. Neither has done much to distinguish himself.
|8/20/2017||Cooper Kupp, LAR, WR|
|Kupp caught six passes for 70 yards and a TD while playing with the starters in the Rams' preseason win over the Raiders.
Analysis: Kupp is showing he's more than capable of making the transition from FCS to the NFL. Kupp, who set FCS records at Eastern Washington with 428 catches for 6,464 yards and 73 TDs, could be a fantasy sleeper.
|8/20/2017||Jared Goff, LAR, QB|
|Goff finished 16 for 20 for 160 yards, leading another TD drive that was capped by Todd Gurley's 2-yard run and a field goal drive late in the first half as the Rams beat the Raiders on Saturday.
Analysis: It's only the preseason, but Goff has looked pretty good so far - certainly a vast improvement over his awful rookie year.
|8/20/2017||Tarik Cohen, Chi, RB|
|Cohen carried 11 times for 77 yards in the Bears' preseason win over the Cardinals.
Analysis: The 5-foot-6, 181-pound fourth-round pick out of North Carolina A&T started with Jordan Howard and Jeremy Langford out with injuries and impressed. "That's the mainstay of my game, being a speedy back with a low center of gravity," Cohen said, "so I'm hard to tackle."
