Hall of Fame harness racing driver Herve Filion dies at 77

(AP) -- Herve Filion, the Hall of Fame harness racing driver won retired in 2012 with a then-North American record of 15,179 victories, died Thursday. He was 77.

"God saw you getting tired and a cure not meant to be," Filion's family said on Facebook. "So he put his arms around you and whispered `come to me.' Our dad, Herve Filion, crossed the finish line like the champion he is and became our angel today." (MORE)

Big Orange wins Gold Cup at Royal Ascot

ASCOT, England (AP) Big Orange won the Gold Cup at Royal Ascot by fending off Order Of St George in a thrilling sprint to the post to edge home by a short head on Thursday.

ASCOT, England (AP) Globetrotting horse Highland Reel won the richest race of the Royal Ascot meeting to take his career earnings to around 6 million pounds, while American trainer Wesley A. Ward collected a second victory of the week with Con Te Partiro.

After recent triumphs in the Breeders' Cup Turf at Santa Anita and the Coronation Cup at Epsom, Highland Reel claimed another Group 1 victory for leading trainer Aidan O'Brien by holding on to win the Prince of Wales's Stakes by a length. (MORE)

Tapwrit wins Belmont Stakes by 2 lengths for Pletcher

NEW YORK (AP) The road to the winner's circle in the Belmont Stakes ran through the Kentucky Derby, even if the Derby and Preakness winners skipped the final leg of the Triple Crown.

Tapwrit overtook favored Irish War Cry in the stretch to win by two lengths on Saturday, giving trainer Todd Pletcher his third career victory in the Belmont. He won in 2007 with filly Rags to Riches and in 2013 with Palace Malice. (MORE)
