SJ's Hertl nets 3rd in OT, Caps' skid 6

WASHINGTON (AP) Logan Couture needed a new stick for overtime.

So convinced the San Jose Sharks were heading toward another loss, Couture went to the bench and broke his stick over the boards. Then he looked up and saw Evander Kane score the tying goal with one second left. Minutes later, Tomas Hertl completed his hat trick in overtime to beat the Washington Capitals 7-6 Tuesday night.

Hertl went hat trick-for-hat trick with Alex Ovechkin, scoring 1:48 into the extra period to snap the Sharks' losing streak at three and send them into a 10-day break on a high note.

Backlund's OT goal keeps Flames red hot

CALGARY, Alberta (AP) Mikael Backlund scored 15 seconds into overtime Tuesday night to give the Calgary Flames a 3-2 victory over the Carolina Hurricanes.

Calgary (33-13-5) heads into the All-Star break as the No. 1 team in the Western Conference, six points up on San Jose.

Blackhawks win SO to end Isles' run at 5

CHICAGO (AP) Jonathan Toews and Patrick Kane scored in the shootout to send the Chicago Blackhawks to a 3-2 win over the Islanders on Tuesday night, ending New York's five-game winning streak.

Toews scored on a backhander and Kane beat Robin Lehner between the pads after nearly pulling to a stop. Chicago goalie Cam Ward stopped Josh Bailey and Mathew Barzal to give the Blackhawks their second straight victory following a five-game slide.

Hinostroza scores 2 for surging Coyotes

OTTAWA, Ontario (AP) Led by the line of Derek Stepan, Vinnie Hinostroza and Richard Panik, the Arizona Coyotes added another victory to their recent surge.

Hinostroza scored twice and had an assist to propel Arizona past the Ottawa Senators 3-2 on Tuesday night.

Glendening's 2 goals get Wings by Oilers

EDMONTON, Alberta (AP) Luke Glendening scored twice and the Detroit Red Wings headed into the All-Star break with a 3-2 victory over the Edmonton Oilers on Tuesday night.

Dylan Larkin had a goal for the Red Wings, who snapped their two-game skid. Jimmy Howard made 32 saves.

Karlsson may compete in All-Star events

WASHINGTON (AP) There is still a chance San Jose Sharks defenseman Erik Karlsson takes part in NHL All-Star Weekend despite missing the final three games before the break with an injury.

Sharks coach Peter DeBoer says Karlsson went back to California for more tests on what the team is calling a lower-body injury. DeBoer didn't have any further update on Karlsson before his team faced the defending Stanley Cup champion Capitals.

'Canes sign Teravainen for 5 years, $27M

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) The Carolina Hurricanes and forward Teuvo Teravainen have agreed to terms on a five-year contract extension worth $27 million.

General manager Don Waddell said Monday that the deal begins next season, runs through the 2023-24 season and has an average annual value of $5.4 million.

LaDue breaks tie, Kings rally by Blues

LOS ANGELES (AP) Jonathan Quick and the Los Angeles Kings are going into their 11-day break with a bit of momentum.

The Kings rallied for a 4-3 victory over the St. Louis Blues on Monday and are 3-1-1 in their last five games. Quick stopped 33 shots to earn his 302nd NHL victory, which is fourth-best among U.S.-born goaltenders.
